Dīpaṃkara Śrījñāna, more commonly known as Atiśa, was a renowned 11th-century Indian Buddhist scholar, teacher, and monk who played a pivotal role in the revival of Buddhism in Tibet. Born around 980 CE in the region of Bikrampur in present-day Bangladesh, Atiśa came from a royal family but renounced worldly life to become a monk and scholar. He studied at the great monastic universities of Nālandā and Vikramaśīla, where he mastered both the Mahāyāna and Vajrayāna traditions. Revered for his profound knowledge, humility, and ethical conduct, he became one of the most respected Buddhist teachers of his time. In 1042, he was invited to Tibet by King Jangchub Ö to help restore the purity of Buddhist teachings, which had declined after earlier periods of suppression. There, Atiśa composed his most influential work, the Bodhipathapradīpa (Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment), which systematized the Buddhist path and inspired the development of the Kadampa school through his main disciple Dromtönpa. Atiśa’s teachings laid the foundation for the later Gelug tradition and shaped Tibetan Buddhism’s emphasis on ethics, study, and meditation. He passed away in Tibet in 1053 CE and is revered as one of the great reformers and spiritual lights of Tibetan Buddhism.
